Controversial Trayvon Martin Killing Grips the Nation

Trayvon Martin, the teenager who was shot in Florida by George Zimmerman a month ago, has caused ripple effects across the United States. Politicians, celebrities, news reporters, and other people of influence have begun wearing hoodies to show solidarity for the teen.

Martin was walking home from buying Skittles at the gas station while wearing a hoodie when Zimmerman, a leader of the neighborhood watch, began following him for suspicious behavior. He called a police dispatcher, who told him to stop following the youth, advice which Zimmerman ignored.

The neighborhood watch leader then shot Martin, killing him. He claims that he was acting in self-defense, although the call to the police department seems to indicate otherwise.

The police report, corroborated by witnesses, says that Martin attacked Zimmerman, punching him and then getting on top of him to continue the beating. Police say that Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, mouth, and back of the head.

In addition, Martin was currently suspended from school for possession of an empty marijuana bag, making Zimmerman’s comments that he believed Martin was high more valid.

So this national tragedy has arguments on both sides. Martin was unjustifiably profiled for being a black youth and even called his girlfriend to say that he was being followed. Zimmerman was technically correct in his fear of protecting the neighborhood, but disobeyed authorities in escalating the situation. To make matters more complex, Florida has a “Stand Your Ground” law allows people to defend themselves against attacks. So how will this whole situation shape up?

Prosecutors are afraid to charge Zimmerman with a lack of evidence, but now that the nation is behind Trayvon Martin, it is looking grim for Zimmerman. He will most likely get sentenced to prison time, but only time will tell.
